Students in Our School Achieved Great Results in the 2019 World Robotics Competition

Aug 26, 2019

On August 20th to 25th, 2019, the 2019 World Robotics Competition was held in Beijing International Exhibition Center. In this competition, students in our school won two championships in different competition units. Among them, Zhang Dong, He He, Guo Chenfeng and Peng Ruiyi, graduate students from the team of Wu Dongrui, won the first prize of the technical competition “P300 no training data” in the “BCI Brain Control Robot Competition and the 3rd China Brain-Machine Interface Competition”. The team composed of undergraduates such as Jin Xueqing, Yan Yaqin, Han Yunlei, Liu Wei, Lu Hongzhi, and Yang Fujian, who were directed by Zhong Sheng and Zheng Dingfu, won the championship of the “Jingtian Cup” in automatic driving.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) refers to the collection, recognition, and transformation of electrical activity and characteristic signals of the nervous system so that the instructions issued by the human brain can be directly transmitted to the designated machine terminals, thereby making it more convenient and effective to control and operate the robots. It is widely used in many fields, such as rehabilitation, disaster relief, and entertainment experience. The “P300 no training data” game requires modeling without current users training data. Under the guidance of Wu Dongrui, the team from our college adopted the self-developed migration learning algorithm to overcome many problems and finally scored the first place in this item in actual application.

The “Jingtian Cup” series is a competition of Robot Design for the youth. The content of this automatic driving competition was to simulate the urban road scene. The participating teams used the TurtleBot3-Burger of ROBOTIS of Korea to complete the competition. The final rank was based on the total score. After the preparations in the early stage, the team of our college, as the only team from the starting point to the finish line on the field, won the first place in the preliminaries with absolute advantage. They once again played well in the finals on the 22nd and won the championship with excellent results.

It is reported that the World Robotics Competition, which was held concurrently as at the World Robotics Conference, has been held for four times since 2015. It has attracted nearly 80,000 contestants from more than 20 countries around the world. As the most influential official event in the field of robotics at home and abroad, it has been widely praised by the major media as the "Olympic" in the robotics community.
