Professor Xiang Chen from University of Windsor, Canada Visited Our School

Jul 29, 2019

On the afternoon of July 26th, Prof. Xiang Chen from University of Windsor, Canada visited School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation and presented an academic report titled “Mixed H2/H Control - A New Paradigm” at Room 311, South-1 Building. The report was hosted by Prof. Yanwu Wang, and more than 20 teachers and students attended the seminar.

Prof. Xiang Chen received his Ph. D. degree in Systems and Control from Louisiana State University in 1998. Since 2000, he started to work in the Department of Electrical and Computer Science and Department of Machinery, Automation and Material Engineering in University of Windsor. At present, he is a Professor in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, senior editor of top journal IEEE/ASME Transaction on Mechatronics, associate editor of SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, International Journal of Intelligent Robotics and Applications, Control Theory and Technology and Unman Systems.Prof. Xiang Chen received his Ph. At present, he is a Professor in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, senior editor of top journal IEEE/ASME Transaction on Mechatronics, associate editor of SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, International Journal of Intelligent Robotics and Applications, Control Theory and Technology and Unman Systems.

Prof. Chen systematically established stabilization and robust control methods for nonlinear (static and dynamic) systems and solved the recognized problem of robust stabilization control for nonlinear systems, which made a fundamental contribution to the theory of multi-objective robust control. He also conducted a series of basic and applied pioneering research works in the field of optimization of visual sensing system and achieved world-leading accomplishments. Prof. Chen has won “University of Windsor Research Award” for four times and published more than 100 SCI papers. His main research fields include robust and optimal control of complex systems, complex networked systems, vehicle control systems and machine vision sensor networks.

In his report, Prof. Chen discussed a new paradigm controller design, which could improve the performance without a trade-off. And he provided the new design framework with mixed H2/Hcontrol design. It turned out that the new paradigm not only had H2 control performance but also had H control performance. Last, he verified the effectiveness of the paradigm with the application of inverted pendulum.

Prof. Chen’s report was humorous and the atmosphere was very lively. His visit and report has broadened  the horizons of students and teachers in the field of robust control and given them many inspirations. In the end, Prof. Yanwu Wang extended thanks to Professor Chen.
