Professor Dongrui Wu’s Team Won Two International Awards

In the IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics (SMC) held in Banff, Canada from 5th to 8th in October 2017, Prof. Dongrui Wu from School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation won the IEEE SMC Early Career Award for his outstanding achievements in the research of computational intelligence and brain-computer interface. He is the first awardee ever and also the only awardee in 2017. The IEEE SMC Early Career Award is set up in 2014 by IEEE SMC Association, which aims to reward young scholars under 35 who have made outstanding contributions to systems science and engineering, human-computer interaction systems and the theory and application of cybernetics. It is awarded to 1-2 people worldwide each year. Due to the strict selection requirements, the winners of this award are vacant from 2014 to 2016.

In the 24th International Conference on Neural Information Processing (ICONIP) held in Guangzhou from 14th to 18th in November 2017, the paper “Transfer learning enhanced common spatial pattern filtering for brain computer interfaces (BCIs): Overview and a new approach”, written by Prof. Dongrui Wu and his doctoral student He He, won the Best Student Paper Award Finalist. This paper proposed a new method of combining transfer learning and common space pattern filter, which could effectively improve the accuracy of BCIs system when calibration data was insufficient.

Prof. Dongrui Wu received his Ph. D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Southern California in 2009. In 2016, he was selected into the 12th  Recruitment Program of Global Experts in China. In the same year, he joined the School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation of HUST and established the Brain-Computer Interface and Machine Learning Laboratory. This laboratory mainly focuses on affective computing, brain-computer interface, machine learning, computational intelligence and intelligent control. By now, Prof. Dongrui Wu has gained three American and international patents, published an academic monograph “Perceptual Computing” and more than 100 papers in international academic journals and conferences, which have been cited for more than 4400 times. At present, Prof. Dongrui Wu is the deputy editor of IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems (IF=7.671), IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems (IF=2.493) and IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine(IF=6.343).
