Professor Karimi from Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy, Visited Our School

Aug 13, 2019

On the morning of August 11th, Prof. Hamid Reza Karimi from Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy visited School of Artificial Intelligence and Automation and gave a report titled “Structural Vibration Control under Information Constraints and Multi-Actuation Schemes” in Room 311, South-1 Building. The report was hosted by Prof. Yanwu Wang and more than 20 teachers and students attended the report.

Prof. Karimi received his Bachelor degree of Science (first honor) in Electric Power System from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran in 1988. From 2001 to 2005, he successively received his Master’s and Ph. D. degrees (first honour) in Control System from University of Tehran. From 2009 to 2016, he was a professor in Department of Mechatronics and Control in University of Aged. Since 2016, he has been the professor of Applied Mechanics, Department of Mechanical Engineering in Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy. His research interests include control system and mechatronics and its applications in vehicle control system and wind energy.

At present, Prof. Karimi is the chief editor of the Journal of Cyber-Physical Systems, Taylor & Francis and Journal of Machines (MDPI Switzerland). He is also the editor of some international journals such as IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, Learning Systems, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems-I: Regular Papers, IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics: Systems, Information  Sciences, IFAC-Mechatronics, International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control, Neurocomputing and Asian Journal of Control and Journal of The Franklin Institute. Moreover, he is a member of Agder Academy of Science and Letters, IEEE Technical Committee on Uncertainty Systems, Committee on Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems, IFAC Technical Committee on Electromechanical System, Robust Control Committee and Vehicle Control Committee. He once won the title of Highly Cited Scholar in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

In his report, Prof. Karimi reviewed some recent achievements on vibration control of structural systems. He introduced the basic concepts of structural control, summarized and compared the basic methods of structural control, and then discussed the design strategies of advanced controllers under information constraints and different schemes. Taking seismic protection of large building structures as the study case, he introduced some recent research results on the effective calculation of partial state information and decentralized control design strategies, including structural control of the single building and structural control of two interconnected buildings. Then Prof. Karimi introduced a new kind of mechanical equipment, which provided a new solution for the structural control of buildings. The comparison results proved the advantage of the proposed control strategy. Last, he gave some concluding comments on vibration control of structural systems.

The report was rich in content and the atmosphere on the spot was very active. Prof. Karimi gave targeted guidance to the problems that students encountered in the writing of scientific papers, which benefited them a lot. This report deepened students’ understanding of vibration control of structural systems, improved their skills and methods of writing papers, and gave great inspiration and help to students. Finally, Prof. Yanwu Wang thanked Prof. Karimi for his excellent report. The report was a complete success.
